Sell Used Hard Drives: SAS, SATA, NAS and Enterprise.
Buyback of used hard disk drives, wiped with verification before resale. High-capacity enterprise drives are in steady demand. Old laptop drives mostly do not.
PrivAce Technologies buys used hard drives from Seagate, Western Digital, Toshiba and HGST: enterprise SAS and SATA, NAS, surveillance and desktop drives. Each drive is wiped with a verified overwrite and checked for health before resale. Drives that fail are degaussed or shredded and certified.
A drive that has been degaussed can never be used again, so it has no resale value. If you want the value, choose wiping.

How to judge a used hard drive.
The label gives the model, capacity and interface. SATA drives have a visible gap between the data and power sections of the connector. SAS drives close that gap and come from servers and arrays. SATA drives come from desktops, NAS boxes and some servers.
Power-on hours and reallocated sectors, read from SMART data, tell us how worn the drive is. We read them before pricing.
NAS buyers care about recording technology. Conventional magnetic recording (CMR) drives are preferred for RAID. In 2020 Western Digital renamed its CMR NAS line WD Red Plus, while plain WD Red drives in that range use shingled recording (SMR).
HGST was bought by Western Digital in 2012, and its enterprise drives continue under the WD Ultrastar name.
What we check at inspection.
Equipment is inspected before the quotation. These are the things that matter most.
| What we check | Ideal | Needs attention |
|---|---|---|
| Capacity | 8 TB and larger | 1 TB and smaller |
| Class | Enterprise and NAS | Laptop 2.5 inch |
| Health | Low power-on hours, no reallocated sectors | Worn or failing |
| Recording | CMR for NAS use | SMR |
| Caddies | Server caddies included | Missing |
| Method | Wiped and verified | Degaussed or shredded: no value |
Prepare hard drives for sale.
- Decide per batch: wipe for reuse, or destroy for policy.
- Keep drives in padded or anti-static packaging. Dropped drives fail.
- Keep server drives in their caddies.
- List models and capacities, or photograph the labels.

Questions, answered.
No. Degaussing wipes the factory servo tracks the heads need to find data, so the drive cannot work again. If you want resale value, the drive must be wiped instead.
All of them: enterprise SAS and SATA, NAS, desktop and laptop drives. Drives that can be wiped with verification may be reused; the rest are shredded and recycled.
Yes. They are wiped with verification first, because they hold footage.
Yes, after a verified overwrite. Wiped drives get a report with the method and result, and destroyed media gets a certificate.
