Hard Drive Shredding.

The only method that works on every media type, and the only one where the outcome is visible. Onsite at your premises, or at our parent company’s facility.

The short answer

Hard drive shredding physically destroys a drive by feeding it through hardened rotary cutters that reduce it to fragments. Unlike erasure, nothing is left to verify and nothing can be reconstructed: the platters or flash packages no longer exist as readable media. It is the only sanitisation method that works identically on hard disks, SSDs, NVMe drives, tape and optical media.

Shredding is irreversible, so the drive’s residual value is lost. That is the trade-off: choose it when the data outweighs the hardware.

What actually happens to the drive

A drive is fed into a shredder fitted with hardened steel cutters that pull it through and reduce it to fragments. There is no partial outcome: a drive either went through or it did not.

Particle size is the thing to ask about, and almost nobody does. A drive broken into four large pieces is not destroyed in any meaningful sense: a platter fragment large enough to mount in a lab still carries readable tracks. NIST SP 800-88 addresses this directly: for magnetic hard disks the requirement is destruction of the recording surface, and for flash media the particle size must be small enough that individual memory packages cannot be recovered intact.

This matters more for SSDs than for hard disks. An SSD stores data in a handful of flash chips on a small board. If the shred leaves an intact chip, the data on that chip is intact. Solid-state media therefore needs finer reduction than a 3.5-inch hard disk does, which is why we separate the two streams rather than running everything at one setting.

Drives are counted before they enter the shredder, and serials are logged first when your audit requires it. Your Certificate of Destruction is built from that record.

When shredding is the right choice

Choose shredding when:

  • The media held regulated, financial, health or customer personal data
  • The drive has failed and cannot be verified by erasure software: a drive that will not respond cannot be confirmed wiped
  • The drive is an SSD holding highly sensitive data, where you do not want to rely on the controller executing its own secure-erase honestly
  • Your information security policy simply mandates physical destruction, which is common in banking and insurance
  • The hardware is old enough that its residual value is negligible anyway

Choose erasure instead when the drive is healthy, the data is ordinary business data, and the hardware still carries value worth recovering. See certified data wiping.

Most corporate batches use both. A typical refresh shreds the drives from finance, HR and executive machines and erases the rest, so value is recovered where it is safe to do so.

Onsite shredding, or at the parent company’s plant

If your information security policy forbids media leaving the building, normal for banks, insurers and NBFCs, we bring the equipment to you. Your security team witnesses the process and the certificates are issued before we leave the premises.

Where that is not required, drives are packed and transported under documented custody to our parent company’s MPCB-authorised facility at Waluj MIDC, shredded there, and the Certificate of Destruction returned to you.

Both routes produce the same document set. The difference is who watches, and what that is worth to your auditor.

What happens to the fragments

Shredded media is not waste in the ordinary sense: it is a mixed material stream containing aluminium, rare-earth magnets, circuit board and steel, and it is regulated under the E-Waste (Management) Rules, 2022.

Fragments go into the authorised recycling stream at our parent company’s facility, where metals are separated and recovered. You receive the Form 6 E-Waste Manifest at collection and the Certificate of E-Waste Recycling after processing, in addition to the Certificate of Destruction.

Those are two different documents proving two different things, and you should hold both. A recycling certificate says nothing about whether your data was destroyed.

Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes, and they need a different setting. An SSD holds data in a few flash chips on a small board, so the shred has to reduce the media finely enough that no memory package survives intact. A particle size adequate for a 3.5-inch hard disk can leave an SSD chip whole. We separate solid-state media from magnetic media rather than running one setting across a mixed batch.

Fine enough that the recording surface is destroyed for magnetic media, and fine enough that individual flash packages cannot be recovered for solid-state media, following NIST SP 800-88. Tell us your policy requirement at scoping and we will confirm in writing what will be applied before the job.

They do different jobs. Degaussing only works on magnetic media and does nothing at all to an SSD. Shredding works on every media type. If your batch is mixed, shredding is the safer single method; if it is all magnetic media, degaussing is equally valid and often faster in volume.

Yes. Onsite shredding is available for organisations whose policy forbids media leaving site. Your team witnesses the destruction and the certificates are issued before we leave the building.

Drives are counted before destruction, with serials logged first when your audit requires it, and the Certificate of Destruction is built from that record. Tell us at scoping whether your audit needs device-level records or consignment-level and we will confirm the format in advance.

No. Shredding removes the physical medium; there is no surface left to read. This is the practical difference from erasure, where a verification step exists precisely because the medium survives and the result has to be confirmed.
