The three-digit number gives the family and screen size. In the EliteBook 800 series, 830 is 13 inch, 840 is 14 inch, 850 is 15 inch and 860 is 16 inch. A last digit of 5, as in 845, usually means an AMD Ryzen processor instead of Intel.
The G number is the generation, and a higher G is newer. EliteBook 840 G5 machines date from around 2018, G6 from around 2019, G7 from around 2020, G8 from around 2021, G9 from around 2022 and G10 from around 2023. ProBook G numbers work the same way.
In 2025 HP simplified its names. New models carry a tier number and a G1 suffix with a letter for the processor: i for Intel, a for AMD and q for Qualcomm. An EliteBook 8 G1i is a 2025 Intel EliteBook.
The product number and serial number on the bottom label identify the exact configuration. Sharing them gives the most accurate quote.
