The letter is the form factor: R for rack, T for tower, M or MX for blade. In a three-digit Intel model such as the R740, the first digit is the class (6 for a 1U two-socket server, 7 for a 2U two-socket server), the second digit is the generation (4 means 14th generation) and the last digit 0 means Intel.
Four-digit models such as the R7525 are AMD EPYC servers. The first two digits give the class and generation, the third gives the socket count and the final 5 marks AMD.
The service tag on the pull-out luggage tag or the chassis identifies the exact configuration. iDRAC, Dell's remote management controller, also shows it. 13th generation servers use iDRAC8, and 14th to 16th generation use iDRAC9.
Equipment is inspected before the quotation. These are the things that matter most.
