The most important step before selling a ThinkPad is removing the supervisor password, because a locked ThinkPad cannot be used by the next owner.

Identify your model
How to read a ThinkPad name.
Older ThinkPads used a letter and three digits, where the middle digit showed the generation: T460 from around 2016, T470 around 2017, T480 around 2018 and T490 around 2019.
From 2020 Lenovo moved to screen size plus generation. A T14 Gen 1 is from around 2020, Gen 2 around 2021, Gen 3 around 2022, Gen 4 around 2023 and Gen 5 around 2024. An s suffix, as in T14s, means the thinner version.
The X1 Carbon has been counted in generations since 2012. Gen 9 dates from around 2021 and Gen 11 from around 2023.
The machine type and serial number on the bottom label, often starting with 20 or 21, identify the exact configuration.

Before pickup
How to prepare the devices.
- Remove the ThinkPad supervisor password. Lenovo does not reset a forgotten supervisor password; the fix is a system board replacement, so a locked unit sells for parts.
- Remove the power-on and hard disk passwords.
- Deregister devices from Windows Autopilot and remove them from Intune or your MDM.
- Record BitLocker status. Do not share recovery keys.
- Send machine types and serial numbers.
- Pack chargers with the laptops.

Yes. There is no minimum quantity. Individuals and small offices can sell a single laptop.
The drive is wiped with verified erasure software or physically destroyed before any resale. You receive a Certificate of Destruction, plus a per-device erasure report where software wiping was used.
