What Are Old Company Laptops and IT Assets Worth in India?

Realistic recovery ranges, two worked examples, and the factors that move the price up or down.

The short answer

Working business laptops three to five years old usually recover 10% to 25% of their original price. A ₹60,000 laptop at about three years is typically worth around ₹15,000, and one that cost ₹80,000 to ₹90,000 new usually fetches ₹8,000 to ₹15,000 after three to five years. The exact figure depends on age, condition, locks, configuration and quantity, which is why every quote should be itemised per device.

The curve

How value falls with age.

The recovery value of IT falls on a curve. The first year takes the biggest drop. From years two to four, business laptops hold a usable share of their price because refurbishers and second-hand buyers want them. After year five, most value comes from parts: RAM, SSDs, screens and chargers.

Two things speed up the drop: a new generation of processors or operating system that leaves older machines behind, and storage. A laptop sitting in a cupboard for a year loses value without being used at all.

Recovery range

What percentage of the original price comes back.

Working business laptops three to five years old usually recover 10% to 25% of their original purchase price. Two examples from our own quotes:

  • A laptop bought for about ₹60,000, three years old and in good condition, is typically worth around ₹15,000.
  • A laptop that cost ₹80,000 to ₹90,000 new usually fetches ₹8,000 to ₹15,000 after three to five years.

Where a lot lands in that range depends on quantity, model and configuration, physical condition and how well the machines were looked after. Claims of 40% or more on three-year-old laptops are not realistic in the Indian market, so treat them with care.

Desktops follow the same logic with lower numbers. Complete sets with monitors sell better than loose units. See how one Andheri East office sold its desktops.

Five things finance should know.

  1. Your asset register shows book value, which is an accounting figure. Resale value is what the market pays. They are rarely the same.
  2. Ask for an itemised quote, not a lump sum, so you can see each device's value.
  3. Confirm whether the price includes GST.
  4. Confirm when you get paid. With PrivAce, payment comes before pickup.
  5. Keep the documents: purchase record, certificates and recycling paperwork.
Questions

Questions, answered.

Typically ₹8,000 to ₹15,000 for a machine that cost ₹80,000 to ₹90,000 new and has been reasonably maintained. Five-year-old machines sit at the lower end or below.

For working business laptops three to five years old, usually 10% to 25% of the original purchase price. A ₹60,000 laptop at about three years is typically worth around ₹15,000. Quantity, condition and upkeep decide where a lot falls.

Yes, especially in volume and with matching monitors. Buyers pay more for complete desktop-and-monitor sets than for loose units, and small form factor models sell better than old towers.

Always confirm. Quotes to companies can be stated inclusive or exclusive of GST, and the difference is significant on a large lot.

Before year four or five, and before a new processor generation pushes prices down. Equipment kept in storage loses value every quarter.
