How to Dispose of Office Computers Legally in Mumbai.
The rule that applies, how to check a recycler in Maharashtra, and the documents to keep, in the order you need them.
To dispose of office computers legally in Mumbai, hand them only to a registered recycler, refurbisher or producer (E-Waste Rules, 2022, rule 8), check that recycler on the MPCB list, destroy the data before anything leaves, and keep the signed manifest and the certificates.
PrivAce collects from offices across Mumbai for free and recycles through Greenlife Ewaste Recycling Pvt. Ltd., our parent company, at its MPCB-authorised Waluj plant.
The legal route, start to finish.
- Confirm what you are retiring. Desktops, laptops, servers, monitors, printers and the forgotten ones: CCTV recorders, NAS boxes, old phones.
- Pick an authorised receiver. Check the name on the MPCB list and ask for the consent letter.
- Get a price before you get a pickup. Working business equipment has resale value. Ask for an item-wise quote, not a weight rate.
- Destroy the data at your office. Our default is onsite and witnessed by your team. Wiped drives get a serial-numbered erasure report each.
- Sign the Form 6 manifest at your door before the vehicle leaves.
- File the certificates: Certificate of Destruction for shredded drives, and the Certificate of E-Waste Recycling within 7 working days.
What each route gives you.
| Route | Meets rule 8? | Data handled? | Paperwork |
|---|---|---|---|
| Local scrap dealer by the kilo | Usually not | No | None |
| Donation to staff or a charity | Not for e-waste | Only if you wipe first | Your own record |
| Authorised recycler only | Yes | Sometimes | Recycling certificate |
| ITAD company with an authorised plant | Yes | Yes, before anything else | Manifest, erasure reports, Certificate of Destruction, recycling certificate |
Why Mumbai needs the extra check.
Mumbai’s authorised recycling plants are mostly outside the city, in Vasai, Wada, Bhiwandi and Tarapur, because recycling needs industrial land and consent. Many collectors in the city are not recyclers at all. That is why the receiver check in step 2 matters more here than almost anywhere else. For a list of recyclers on the MPCB register, see e-waste recycling companies in Mumbai.
Questions, answered.
If the company is a bulk consumer under the E-Waste (Management) Rules, 2022, rule 8 says its e-waste goes only to a registered producer, refurbisher or recycler. Most local scrap dealers are none of these, and they give you no manifest or certificate to show an auditor.
Find the company on the MPCB list of authorised e-waste dismantlers and recyclers, then ask for its current Consent to Operate and CPCB registration and check the dates.
Yes. The E-Waste Rules do not deal with data, but the DPDP Act and your own security policy do. Certified wiping gives you a report per drive; shredding gives you a Certificate of Destruction.
With PrivAce, nobody. Pickup, packing and transport are free, and anything with resale value is paid for before it leaves your office.
